Since childhood, I’ve always loved jam and toast. Now, my little one enjoys it just as much! However, store-bought strawberry jam often contains too many preservatives and refined sugar – something I don’t feel comfortable serving my kids. That’s why I make this quick and healthy Strawberry Chia Jam at home. Trust me, set a timer — it takes just 20 minutes, and uses only 4 basic ingredients that I bet you already have in your kitchen!
No canning, no pectin, and no refined sugar – it’s perfect for babies, toddlers, and adults alike.
Why Chia Jam?
Most traditional jam recipes are packed with sugar and require a lot of effort. This version, however, is easy, healthy, and naturally sweetened. Chia seeds naturally thicken when mixed with liquid, providing a perfect texture, plus added fiber, omega-3s, and antioxidants!
Ingredients You’ll Need:
- Strawberries – This is the heart of the jam! You can use frozen strawberries if that’s what you have—they work just fine. However, if you have fresh strawberries in your fridge, I definitely recommend using them for the best flavor and color. Nothing beats the taste of ripe, in-season berries!
- Dates powder – I usually use dates powder because it’s baby-friendly and naturally sweet. Feel free to use whatever you like or have on hand. You can use maple syrup, honey (for little ones over 1 year), or jaggery instead.
- Lemon juice – A little squeeze of lemon makes all the difference! It brightens the flavor and balances out the sweetness. Plus, it helps preserve the jam for longer in the fridge — win-win!
- Chia seeds – These tiny seeds are magic! They naturally swell up and thicken the jam without any need for pectin.
How to Make Strawberry Chia Jam:
1. Cook the Strawberries
In a small saucepan over medium heat, cook the strawberries for 8–10 minutes until soft. Mash them with a fork or potato masher to your desired texture.
2. Add Sweetener
Add dates powder, maple syrup, or honey and lemon juice. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed.
3. Add Chia Seeds
Turn off the heat. Stir in chia seeds and mix well. Let it sit for 10–15 minutes — the chia seeds will naturally thicken the jam.
4. Cool & Store
Let the jam cool completely. Transfer it to a clean jar and store in the fridge for up to 1 week. You can also freeze it for up to 1 month!

Note
- You can experiment with different fruits like blueberries, raspberries, or even mangoes if you want a fun twist!
- If you want a chunkier jam, mash the berries lightly and skip blending altogether.
- This jam keeps well in the fridge for up to one week, but it usually gets eaten way before that in my house!
- Feel free to adjust the sweetness to your family's preference. I like to keep it lightly sweet so the natural fruit flavor really shines through.
- If you’re making this for babies under 1 year, avoid honey and stick to dates powder or maple syrup instead.
- Remember, chia seeds continue to thicken the jam as it sits, so don't worry if it seems a little runny right after cooking.
